The Wilds (Visit this link)
The Wilds sits on 14 square miles of reclaimed surface-mined land, land that is now home to 25 species of Asian, African and North American wildlife. Most species are endangered or threatened and are involved in research and breeding programs. The animals roam freely through very large multi-species habitats. In this environment, the wildlife species tend to develop social groupings and exhibit behavior much as they would in the wild. This occurrence is of great value in terms of accurate research, and also provides a highly unique observation opportunity for the visiting public. You ride through the animal area on a guided tour often viewing animals from just a few feet away. On the tour you learn about these animals and the issues affecting their survival. You also learn about the land itself and the various factors surrounding the mining and reclamation process.
For those interested in a more in-depth learning experience, facility tours are offered. These tours focus on the Wilds research and breeding programs and offer visitors an opportunity to see unique animal management centers such as those for rhinos, giraffes, and hoofstock. Through video presentations, their guide’s narration and, when possible, interaction with animal management staff, visitors learn about the many important projects currently underway.
Other opportunities available to visitors include an education center where you can learn from interactive computer kiosks and various displays that focus on the relationship between humans and their environment. Groups may arrange for a catered buffet or deli lunches they can enjoy in one of the picnic shelters. Don’t forget to save time for a trip to the Gift Market which has a large selection of unique items from around the world. We hope to see you soon at the Wilds.
