The Zoo is the number one family attraction in this area. The best-kept secret in northeast Louisiana may well be the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo. This 60-acre Zoo has a collection of over 500 animals. The Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo was founded in 1923, in Forsythe Park. Two key individuals were Monroe Mayor Arnold Bernstein and Will Atkinson, Commissioner of Streets and Parks. The Zoo was relocated to a 137-acre parcel that today houses the Zoo site and is named in Arnold Bernstein honor.
