Fresno Chaffee Zoo (Visit this link)
One Of The most popular exhibits in the zoo is the South American Tropical Rainforest Exhibit. A unique structure, this exhibit covers 20,000 square feet and is completely enclosed by a fine mesh screen. The screen is suspended from towering poles which soar 55 feet into the air to create a free-flowing and natural environment for an abudance of plant and animal species found primarily in South America.
At the Small Wonders Animal Encounters exhibit all of the breeds in this special exhibit have been developed by man over thousands of years to produce valuable products for human use. Some of the animals like the sheep produce fiber for clothing, meat and lanolin. Some of the animals have been bred for milk production such as the cattle and the goats. The llama was bred to carry heavy loads for man along with providing fine hair for yarn. Each of these breeds originated from wild animals which were brought into man's control and selectively bred for certain traits. It is thought that sheep originated from the wild mouflon, and that the many European breeds of cattle descended from aurochs, which are now extinct.
The Sunda Forest Orangutan & Tiger Exhibit is a new experience. Imagine walking into the new exhibit and hearing the siamangs' great hooting calls long before you see them brachiating high in the trees ahead. The siamangs and the orangutans will inhabit the same forested exhibit space. As you walk along the elevated boardwalk, the red-orange orangutans come into view swinging and swaying on the vines and sway poles. Approaching the main viewing blind, you see the orangutans moving through the forest and notice a long orange- and black-striped animal creeping in the background. "That's a Tiger!" cries one of your children. The tiger is stalking in its own forest habitat adjacent to, but separate from the orangutans and siamangs. Don't worry, though. They won't bother each other, but their proximity will be interesting for each. The tigers will have a forest clearing pool to cool themselves on hot days. The viewing areas and natural design of the exhibits will give you better glimpses into the daily lives of these marvelous animals than any you've seen at the zoo before.
