Orana Wildlife Park (Visit this link)

The Park has been developed as an open range sanctuary for endangered animals, providing them with enclosures as close to their natural habitat as possible. Streams, moats and banks are used as barriers to allow visitors the opportunity to see the animals in a natural manner. Over 400 animals from 70 different species are displayed.

Conservation is one of the Park’s core missions and the name Orana is the Maori word for welcome or place of refuge. Orana Wildlife Park is internationally recognised for its involvement in captive breeding programmes for endangered exotic animals, as well as research relating to New Zealand’s own rare fauna.

There is plenty for visitors to enjoy at the Park with fifteen daily animal feeds, one feed approximately every 40 minutes whilst the Park is open!

Orana Wildlife Park specialises in getting visitors “up close and personal with the animals”. Some animal encounters are not offered anywhere else in the world! Hand feed a Giraffe! Meet White Rhinoceros in a face-to-face encounter! Watch a Cheetah sprint! , Pat a Llama! . Thrill seekers can participate in a wonderful experience, unique to the Park called the Lion Encounter Ride - ride on board our specially designed feeding wagon which travels with the Animal Keepers through the African Lion Reserve for close up views of these magnificent creatures feeding - a truly memorable experience!

An extensive collection of New Zealand native species is of particular appeal for visitors. Observe New Zealand Kiwi, Tuatara and a range of endangered, endemic birds such as Kea, the only alpine parrot in the world. Stroll through the walk-through aviary whilst native birds fly past and listen to their calls. A farmyard area enables visitors to pet a range of domestic animals.

Visitors can walk through the Park and/or ride on the complimentary Safari Shuttle, driven by a wildlife expert who provides a commentary. Alternatively, visitors may wish to participate in daily, guided, walkabout tours.
