Custom Backpacking trips into the awesome beauty of the Sky Islands of the Madrean Archipelago The remote pine forests of the Chiricahua Wilderness are an excellent example of these unique eco-systems. Rising thousands of feet above the desert floor these Sky Islands have an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. White Tail Deer, and the Coatimundi (a raccoon-like animal common to the forests of Central America) are some of the full time residents we will share the wilderness with, they don't seem to mind our visits. The rare and elusive Jaguar has been spotted in the Pelloncillo Mountains, just across the valley. Incredible birding, the Chiricahuas are home to the Elegant Trogan (a neo-tropical bird from Mexico), the Magnificent Hummingbird, and if we are real lucky we might see the rare Thick Billed Parrot. We will camp in meadows full of Rocky Mountain Iris, and feast on wild raspberries (when in season), and hike through forests of Douglas Firs, Ponderosa Pines and the southernmost stand of Engleman Spruce. These mountains are the homelands of the Chiricahua Apache, hike where Geronimo once roamed. This range is located at the confluence of the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Madres, north to south, and the Sonora and Chihuahua. deserts east to west. National Geographic Adventure Magazine (May, 2002) describes them as "Galapagos Arizona" because they are so unique.
The Grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world, and hike through them is an experience beyond compare. Mere words cannot describe the Canyon
The Gila Wilderness in New Mexico offers cool mountain rivers and hot springs, Geronimo was born in the Middle Fork of the Gila River. The Gila Cliff Dwellings are some of the best preserved Native American dwellings in the United States. Hikes through the high county offer views beyond compare, camp in Hummingbird Saddle at over 10,000 feet. Or hike the lower canyons lined with red rock cliffs that are the home to Golden Eagles and Zone tailed Hawks. And after an exciting day of exploring relax in one of the many hot springs.
The Galiuro Wilderness is a training area for the National Outdoor Leadership School, and once you see these remote rugged mountains you will see why. This rare jewel is seldom visited, so you can really have a solitary experience. Abandoned old Gold Mines and historic pioneer cabins are among some of the features of this unique desert environment. Hot Springs Canyon, Redfield Canyon, and Rattlesnake Canyon are just a few of the areas we will visit. These canyons are lined with steep red rock cliffs rising thousands of feet over our heads. Bring your camera, you will regret it if you don't.
