Detroit Public Schools' Children's Museum (Visit this link)
With a history dating back to 1917, the Children's Museum began as a joint
venture between the Detroit Board of Education and the Museum of Art. It was
noted as a "Museum within a Museum." A three-part program of services was
developed featuring classes at the Museum, loan collections for schools and
children's activities after school, on Saturdays and on vacation days.
In 1925, the Detroit Board of Education assumed responsibility for the Museum.
Since then, the Museum has developed into a unique educational and cultural
institution; expanding its collections and activities to include all subject
areas of the curriculum.
The Children's Museum houses nine galleries that feature various exhibitions,
which explore the sciences, history, world cultures and the arts. Museum lessons
and programs are presented in the three main galleries. A popular feature is the
Planetarium, one of the first to be established within the Cultural Center. As
pioneers in offering diverse programming, collection items and services, the
Museum presents thousands of activities for school groups, youth, families and
adults each year.
Today, it is one of the most unique educational and cultural institutions
devoted to stimulating the intellectual curiosity and natural love of learning
among Metropolitan Detroit's youth families and adults.
The Children's Museum provides children, families and adults with fun and
imaginative learning experiences that encourage understanding of themselves and
the world around them.
