Woodlawn Museum (Visit this link)

According to his wishes, additional artifacts identified as "family pieces"
were added to the collection at Woodlawn after George Nixon Black, Jr.'s death.
These pieces were brought from his other homes in Manchester, Massachusetts and
Boston, Massachusetts. The collection reflects the determination of George Nixon
Black, Jr. to make Woodlawn a reflection of the lives of his father and
grandfather. In addition, Woodlawn Museum is the home to two important archival
collections: the business records of Colonel John Black and his son George Nixon
Black, and the records of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations.
The family business records are estimated to reveal the Blacks' connections to
over 3200 individuals or business.

George Nixon Black Jr., left the mansion to the public complete with all its
original furnishings. When entering the home, guests feel they have entered a
time capsule. Richly furnished and ready for daily life, the house evokes a
sense of continued use accurately reflecting the privileged lifestyle of three
generations of the Black family.

Woodlawn sits on the crest of a hill overlooking the city of Ellsworth and
surrounded by majestic pine, spruce, and hemlock trees. Visitors may tour the
museum, stroll through formal gardens, picnic on lush lawns, explore trails
where the Blacks' horses once cantered, browse the gift shop or investigate the
carriage and sleigh collections. A visit to Woodlawn Museum offers the chance to
step into the American past!
