Museum of African Culture (Visit this link)

The Museum of African Culture was created to educate others about the lives
and beliefs of Sub-Saharan African people, to interpret and preserve a unique
collection of African art and artifacts, and to enrich the communities of Maine
and beyond through the celebration of diversity. Since its inception in 1998,
the Museum of African Culture has reached an audience of over a million through
its public programming and the Museum maintains an admission free public display
of the best examples of African masks and artifacts. The Museum endeavors to
speak to all people through the power and messages embodied in its collection.
The art and artifacts contained in the Museum have much to teach not only about
Africa but also about all individuals as human beings.

The Museum of African Culture was founded on August 8, 1998 by Oscar Mokeme and
Arthur Aleshire. Its collection and educational outreach have continued to
expand yearly, making MAC one of Portland's most active cultural institutions.
