The museum also interprets their struggles, adaptations and contributions, with particular emphasis on the Attakapas District of Southwest Louisiana during the 18th and 19th centuries. It outlines the rise and fall of slavery, highlighting the Free People of Color and the economic struggles they faced during Reconstruction after the Civil War, through the end of Reconstruction.

The museum features text panels, artifacts, electronic exhibits and a mural. The 26' mural by Dennis Paul Williams highlights the trades and accomplishments of St. Martinville's Free People of Color.
