Chessington World of Adventures (Visit this link)
Great surprises in Animal Land... explore the 'Trail of the Kings', jungle themed animal experience enabling families to get 'up close and personal' with one of Europe's most successful West Lowland Gorilla families.
FEATURED ATTRACTION: Trail of the Kings
First stop on the 'Trail of the Kings' adventure is the Gorilla experience. Visitors will find themselves transported to an African style game lodge and into the midst of one of Europe's most successful Gorilla families. Anyone who has ever longed to come face to face with these impressive primates will not be disappointed as the only thing separating inhabitants and Guests are huge viewing windows, designed for both close visitor access and total Gorilla comfort.
Chessington's Gorilla Group of three males and seven females, including newest addition baby Kumi born 10th August 2004, is one of very few with three generations of the same family.
Family head is Kumba, who despite weighing in at a hefty 35 stone is a gentle giant. Female “Number One” is Kaja, totally devoted to Kumba and, unusually for a Gorilla, very open in her affections!
Her daughter Asili, is next in the pecking order, closely followed by Shani, mum to Kumi then the younger members of the family seven year old Buu, five year old Mjukuu, 3 year old Shanga, year old Kumili. Completing the family is Bafia, who with no blood relations in the group comes last in the status stakes, but is happy to play the role of reliable aunty.
Visitors will be able to witness the intimate lives of Kumba and gang first hand. Gorillas tend to be most active early in the day so get there early to see them at their liveliest or come later in the day for a more laid back encounter!
Eye to Eye with Tigers
Next Explorers will meet a unique gathering of some of the rarest big cats in the world. Amidst the ruins of a temple right out of the pages of Kipling’s classic, The Jungle Book, visitors will come eye to eye with two young Sumatran Tigers.
Ratna and Batu arrived at Chessington in February 2004 as part of a vital Endangered Species Breeding Programme to protect the species of which there are only 400 left in existence in the wild. Living nearby and almost as rare are beautifully spotted Persian Leopards and our majestic Asian Lions Devika and Ashok and their delightful cubs born May 2004, two girls Kirmantha and Lona and one boy Jadoo.
